Produced in Fukui Prefecture in Okata River basin, Echizen Washi is defined by the use of bast fibers like endothelium of plant epidermis and the other traditional plants like kozo. The main characteristic is its elegance and beauty , with rich colors that stimulate sensibility.
The mulberry shrubs(Kozo) used in this region have thick, long, glossy fibers that produce strong Washi paper and that can have many uses, like for calligraphy paper, dolls, Washi paper making crafts.
The Washi obtained by paper bush (Mitsumata) is a good material for printing paper and sliding door paper as it has a smooth and glossy surface.
As it is difficult to grow the Ganpi plant in this area, it was used a local plant, resistant to insect damage and grown since ancient times.
The paper obtained from Kozo is in particular, a special Washi, which can be made into a crepe-like grain and can be used as a blank paper or a tea sheet. Other types of Echizen Washi were used as official paper or diploma paper in public houses, samurai`s houses or shrines
